KKK
Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a secret organization in southern U.S. It was active for several years after the civil war and its goal was to put an end to the right the blacks had gained a couple years prior. The Ku Klux Klan is known for racist violence, including lynchings of black people. After a period of decline, white Protestant nativist groups revived the Klan in the early 20th century, burning crosses and staging rallies, parades and marches denouncing immigrants, Catholics, Jews, blacks and organized labor. The Klan is estimated to have between 5,000 and 8,000 members according to figures released in 2012.
